Tax-free and Sharia-compliant: choosing a halal ISA
In the United Kingdom, a halal ISA is an Individual Savings Account whose cash or investments follow Sharia rules, such as an Islamic cash ISA paying expected profit or a stocks and shares ISA holding screened shares, sukuk and gold.

Why the ISA wrapper itself is neutral
An ISA is simply a tax wrapper defined by HMRC. It does not decide what the money is invested in. Whether an ISA is halal depends entirely on the underlying product: a conventional cash ISA pays interest, while an Islamic cash ISA pays an expected profit rate.
In the 2026 to 2027 tax year, the total that can be paid into all ISAs is £20,000. The allowance can be split between a cash ISA, a stocks and shares ISA, an innovative finance ISA and a Lifetime ISA, within the separate limits for each type.
Islamic cash ISAs and expected profit
Islamic banks place cash ISA deposits in Sharia-compliant assets such as home purchase plans and share the return. Gatehouse Bank offers an easy access cash ISA and Woodland fixed-term cash ISAs from one to five years, and accepts transfers from other providers.
How screening works in a stocks and shares ISA
Equity screens exclude companies whose main business is prohibited, such as conventional banking, alcohol, gambling, tobacco and pork. Financial ratio tests then remove companies with excessive interest-bearing debt or cash. Any small impermissible income may require purification, depending on the fund’s approach.
- Business activity screen: excludes prohibited sectors outright.
- Financial ratio screen: limits debt, interest-bearing cash and receivables relative to market value.
- Sukuk: Islamic certificates backed by assets, replacing conventional bonds.
- Physical gold: held in allocated form to satisfy spot-delivery rules.
Tax treatment inside and outside the wrapper
Profit, dividends and gains inside an ISA are free of income tax and capital gains tax. Outside the wrapper, Islamic deposit profit is taxed like interest under the alternative finance rules, so holding Sharia-compliant cash or funds in an ISA removes that liability.
Who provides halal ISAs in 2026?
Wahed Invest, authorised by the FCA under reference 833225, offers a Sharia-screened stocks and shares ISA with six risk portfolios, from £50. Its holdings include Islamic ETFs, sukuk and physical gold, overseen by a Sharia supervisory board advised by Shariyah Review Bureau.
Investors who prefer a do-it-yourself route can hold Islamic index ETFs, such as the iShares MSCI USA Islamic UCITS ETF, which BlackRock lists as ISA-eligible with a 0.30% ongoing charge, inside a stocks and shares ISA with a mainstream investment platform.
Honest limits of the halal ISA market
Choice is far narrower than for conventional ISAs. There is no widely available Islamic Lifetime ISA or Junior ISA from a dedicated Islamic provider, and most halal equity funds are heavily weighted to large US technology companies, which concentrates risk.
Regulation and investor protection
ISA managers must be approved by HMRC and authorised by the FCA. Cash ISAs held with banks are protected by the FSCS up to £120,000 per person per bank. Investment ISAs are covered up to £85,000 if a firm fails, but never for falling markets.
Checking a provider’s Sharia credentials
Ask who sits on the Sharia board, whether screening is audited, and how purification is handled. Wahed names its external Sharia adviser, while ETF issuers rely on the index provider’s screening methodology, which investors can read in the fund documentation.
Opening a halal ISA step by step
- Decide between cash, stocks and shares, or a combination within the £20,000 allowance.
- Compare expected profit rates for cash ISAs, or fees and portfolios for investment ISAs.
- Check eligibility: UK residency, age 18 or over, and a National Insurance number.
- Open the account online and complete identity verification.
- Fund it by debit card or bank transfer, or request an ISA transfer from an existing provider.
- Select a portfolio or individual Islamic funds and set any regular contribution.
- Review the holdings and Sharia reports at least once a year.
Transfers must be made through the new provider’s transfer process. Withdrawing money from an old ISA and paying it into a new one uses up fresh allowance and can lose the tax-free status of past contributions.
Costs and documents compared
| Item | What to expect | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Wahed stocks and shares ISA fee | 1% a year up to £250,000, then 0.75% and 0.50% | Fund costs charged separately |
| Islamic ETF ongoing charge | iShares MSCI USA Islamic: 0.30% a year | Platform fee added on top |
| Cash ISA fees | None; minimum £1 easy access or £1,000 fixed at Gatehouse | Early withdrawal reduces profit on fixed terms |
| Annual allowance | £20,000 across all ISAs in 2026 to 2027 | Unused allowance cannot be carried forward |
| Documents | Photo ID, address, National Insurance number, UK bank account | Most checks done electronically |
Errors that cost halal investors money
- Withdrawing and re-depositing instead of using an ISA transfer.
- Assuming every “ethical” or ESG fund is Sharia-compliant.
- Ignoring concentration in a few large US technology shares.
- Holding uninvested cash in a platform account that earns interest.
- Paying into more than one stocks and shares ISA in the same tax year where the provider does not allow it.
Is a stocks and shares ISA permissible at all?
Most scholars accept investing in screened shares because the investor owns part of a real business. The concerns are the underlying holdings and any interest earned on uninvested cash, which is why Sharia-focused providers avoid interest-bearing cash balances.
Can a halal ISA hold gold?
Yes. Wahed offers a physical gold portfolio, and some platforms offer physically backed gold exchange-traded commodities. Scholars generally require the gold to be allocated and fully backed, so investors should check the product documents before buying.
What happens to the ISA on death?
A surviving spouse or civil partner can receive an additional permitted subscription equal to the ISA’s value. The investments then pass under the will or Islamic inheritance planning, and Sharia-compliant wills should be drafted to reflect the fixed shares of heirs.
Are cash ISA rates lower at Islamic banks?
Not necessarily. Gatehouse quotes competitive expected profit rates on fixed-term cash ISAs, and Islamic banks sometimes top best-buy tables. The rate is an expected profit rate rather than a guaranteed interest rate, although UK Islamic banks state they have always paid it.
